Are you one of the many people who do not know when and what to do to maintain your vehicle? Do not be afraid and do not feel stupid because MOST people do not know this information. Here is a list of things you should do and when you should do them at the intervals that WE recommend. The dealer is going to recommend the minimum you should do because, ultimately, they want you to buy a new car! They do not want your car to last forever! Our schedule is a little more aggressive than a dealers because we want you to get some more value out of your vehicle. You should always at least check and adhere to any recommendations by your dealer service manual to make sure you stay within your warranty requirements. You can also check the link on our home page to the Be Car Care Aware foundation to see what they recommend for intervals. But here is a list of what we recommend. Oil changes every 3000 miles (6000 miles with full synthetic oil) Tire rotations and spin balance every 6000 to 9000 miles Wheel alignment once per year Air filters every 15k to 20k miles Basic tune ups (with regular plugs), fuel filters, pcv valves, differential fluids every 30k miles Every 60k miles is a major maintenance milestone for most vehicles. The good part is it usually only comes around every 4 to 5 years and then you can be worry free for another 4 or 5! Every 60k you should be replacing ALL fluids (power steering, brake, transmission, and coolant). Major tune up (all including platinum plugs) and all filters. Other things to consider: Shocks and struts wear gradually and can wreak havoc on other steering and suspension parts. They can fail anywhere from 30k to 80k miles! Replace them around 50k to extend the life of the other components! Check you service manual (or ask us) to see if your vehicle has a timing belt! They have different replacement intervals. Some are 60k, 80k, or 100k. Some may cause severe and costly engine damage if they break! The number one failure of roadside vehicles in the US is still broken hoses or belts. Rubber degrades with heat and time and Goodyear estimates belts and hoses to need replacement at 60k miles. Maintain your vehicles for safety and savings. Preventive maintenance is always less costly than repairs! And more convenient! |
